The Fibonacci Series

Leonardo of Pisa, nicknamed Fibonacci, introduced the Golden Section to Europe over 800 years ago. While the concept is found in elements of nature, artists and mathematicians have been diagramming it for centuries and we find evidence of it in art and products of ancient cultures. It’s not always clear whether it emerges with conscious intent from the human hand or if it naturally emerges through the structure and process of making things.

Tutorial 1

The Fibonacci Series is a sequence of numbers which describes the proportions of growth found in nature.

Tutorial 2

The proportions of neighboring stages of growth found in nature are in complete harmony. The Fibonacci series is the only proportional devision that illustrates complete harmony between complimentry parts of a greater whole.

Tutorial 3

The proportions in the Fibonacci Series produce naturally balanced compositions with a division line known as the Golden Section. Studies have shown that people prefer the visual balance of the golden section over any other proportional division.

Tutorial 4

The most famous diagram of the Fibonacci series is the Golden Rectangle with it’s inscribed spiral.

Once we are aware of the concept of Natural Balance we can use it intentionally.
